PROTON TIER: GOLD

Foundation - Linux Technical Documentation

Foundation is a grid-less city-building game focused on organic development and resource management. It runs well under Proton.

Status Check: Proton (Gold)

TWEAKS & TRICKS:

  • Mouse/Camera Spin: Uncontrollable mouse/camera movement at resolutions above 1080p. Solution: Run at 1080p.
  • Poor Performance at 4K: Very low FPS (~20fps) at 3840x2160. Solution: Use Proton-GE and run at 1080p.
  • Audio Crackle & Stuttering: Performance stuttering during autosaves and audio crackle. Solution: Combine default Proton and Proton-GE.
  • Building Area of Effect Display Issues: Incorrect building area of effect displays with AMD and Intel GPUs. Solution: No workaround identified, see https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/2318#issuecomment-2662583881 for more details.
  • Fullscreen Issues on Launch: Tabbing out while the game is launching can cause fullscreen problems. Solution: Change settings or restart the game.
  • GPU Overheating: Alienware Area-51m (and likely others with poor cooling) experiences rapid GPU overheating. Solution: Limit FPS for personal preference.

Verdict: Foundation is a solid buy for Linux gamers. It runs well out of the box on Proton, and performance can be optimized through various tweaks.
