Status Check: Runs via Proton. Status: Gold.

TWEAKS & TRICKS:

  • Problem: Game crashes past loading screen, resulting in a SteamVR crash.

  • Solution: Switch to Proton Experimental.

  • Problem: Consistent crashes on Level 2 when boarding the train; freezes on the loading screen, then crashes to desktop. Progression blocked.

  • Solution: Rename/remove Steam/steamapps/common/Half-Life Alyx/game/hlvr/models/ui/dioramas

  • Problem: Game crashes with SteamVR and ALVR.

  • Solution: Use WiVRn.

  • Problem: Native Linux build unplayable and crashes the entire system when loading the 2nd level.

  • Solution: Use Proton.

  • Problem: Difficulty with AMD GPUs (RX 6600 and above) utilizing native Vulkan rendering.

  • Solution: PRESSURE_VESSEL_IMPORT_OPENXR_1_RUNTIMES=1 PRESSURE_VESSEL_FILESYSTEMS_RW=/var/lib/flatpak/app/io.github.wivrn.wivrn %command%

  • Problem: Audio Issues

  • Solution: The user reports no such issue, so this one is omitted.

Verdict: A solid gold experience for Linux gamers, particularly those with VR headsets. WiVRn appears to be essential for some configurations, and specific launch options are required for native Vulkan rendering with AMD GPUs.
