TWEAKS & TRICKS

  • Black Screen on Launch (Wayland): The game will freeze around the opening credits on Wayland systems.
    • Solution: Turn off fullscreen in the client settings.ini file. This doesn’s matter on X11, but is essential for Wayland.
  • Frequent Crashes (Wayland): Without Gamescope, the game crashes frequently.
    • Solution: Launch with Gamescope: gamescope -W 2048 -H 1152 -f --force-grab-cursor --backend sdl -F fsr -- %command%
  • Uncontrolled Camera Movement (Wayland): Occasional rapid camera movements when right-clicking and holding to move the camera.
    • Solution: Launch with Gamescope and force cursor grab: gamescope -W 2048 -H 1152 -f --force-grab-cursor --backend sdl -F fsr -- %command%
  • Black Screen on Launch (General): Launching results in a black screen, even after trying various fixes.
    • Solution: Disable fullscreen mode in the client settings.ini file. This fix is especially important when using Wayland.

Verdict

STAR WARS™: The Old Republic™ runs perfectly with Proton, but requires specific configurations, particularly when using Wayland. With the correct Gamescope command and disabled fullscreen, Linux gamers can enjoy a smooth and immersive experience. It’s a worthwhile purchase for Linux gamers, provided you’re prepared to adjust settings.
